Which Grey Flannel do you want?, October 31, 2012

Please be aware that Geoffrey Beene has TWO versions of Grey Flannel, and they are most definitely not the same! There is the original 1976 blend which is simply called “Grey Flannel by Geoffrey Beene”. It comes in a dark green bottle. In 1996, the company put out a second scent called “Eau de Grey Flannel”. It comes in a clear bottle and the liquid is a light blue color. The ORIGINAL is described as orange, lemon, bergamot, oakmoss, sandalwood, and patchouli. The newer, 1996 version, is described as mossy, woody, with notes of vetiver, musk, sandalwood, citrus, and spicy greens. The scents are very different, and personally I detest the newer version (if only because it doesn’t agree with my skin oils). If you are looking for the wonderful original version, please be aware of the differences in packaging, the slight difference in name and – most importantly – the very great difference between the two scents themselves.

A Classic Men’s Perfume Which Is In A Class By Itself, February 27, 2012

This review is from: Grey Flannel by Geoffrey Beene for Men, Eau De Toilette Spray, 4-Ounce (Health and Beauty)
You will either hate this classic perfume or just love it. There is no middle ground. Grey Flannel has an texture and aroma that is distinctively unique. If you reflect upon the men’s perfumes which are in vogue today, you will easily discern that they are very light, girlie perfumes. They are sweet and light. Furthermore, more effort is expended advertising an image attached to the perfume than the quality and character of the perfume itself. It would be fair to say that most men’s perfumes today are androgynous. Which of course complements the lack of manly and rational attributes which is endemic in the modern male. Nearly all of men’s perfumes are designed by creating a composite perfume from the formula of a number of existing perfumes. We are talking about variations on a theme. Grey Flannel is a beast of a completely different order. The Designer did not select any existing men’s perfumes as a reference point but simply created a scent which is completely different. So this is a radical design. This is the designer’s unconstrained conception of an utterly masculine perfume. I can think of only one other men’s perfume which has the same design template, and it is Fahrenheit.

Grey Flannel is a heavy masculine scent with tones of musk, wood and burnt citrus. It has a heavy, dark, tweedy, burnt forest texture. This is a heavy perfume with a very strong scent which will cling to you all day. And I will emphasise this, the scent will not go away later in the day. This is not a perfume that a women can ever wear. This is not a sports or nautical perfume. It operates at a layer below this. It has a primitive yet refined masculine projection. This is a medieval scent almost gothic. Like any truly classic perfume, the scent builds the image as opposed to the advertising budget building the image.

The last bottle of Grey Flannel that I had was in 2004 and I lost it in Moscow. Thereafter, I looked for Grey Flannel in the USA. Europe and Canada to no avail. I was told that the perfume was no longer being made, it was too strong; that tastes had shifted to light perfumes and so forth. I drifted to other men’s perfumes such as Eau Sauvage, Aramis and Fahrenheit but always missed Grey Flannel. This year, I was in a market when I got a whiff of the Grey Flannel scent. The person wearing it advised me that it is available on Amazon. Which led me to purchase it here.

The package arrived in two days with two bottles of Grey Flannel. The Grey Flannel bottles were original and each was enclosed in the trademark woollen sack. The scent was original. And this seller is genuine. After a lapse of six years I was shocked at how heady and strong the scent is. As I have said above, this is a classic perfume which is in a class by itself. It cannot be compared with any other men’s perfume. You may want to include Eau Sauvage, Aramis and Fahrenheit in your wardrobe also.

Grey Flannel will be suitable for truly masculine men who work for themselves, are independent thinkers, work internationally and appreciate liberty and individualism.

I love this product. I have been wearing it for sometime and it has become my signature scent. And no I am not an “old Man” as some reviews have suggested. I am older however and it is not a scent for someone young. It smells manly and doesn’t have a sweet smell or that “Fake Pheromone” smell of some “younger fragrances” Good, clean, fresh smelling.
