As I prefaced my review for Gillette Fusion Proshield Chill Men’s Razor with Flexball Handle and Razor Blade Refill, this review is completely unbiased. I DID NOT receive this item for free in exchange for an honest review. I paid $21.47 for these refill cartridges. Also, this review and the one I just mentioned are basically the same item, you will find a lot of the same information. I wanted to get a thorough review up for this one because some of the other ones seem questionable.

Shaving is one of the things that guys either love or hate. It’s a ritual that most of us do whether it’s every day or a month. I recently saw a commercial for the Gillette Fusion Proshield Razor. As most of you know, Gillette comes out with a new shaving innovation every couple of years or so (it feels like every six months!). Is it necessary? I don’t particularly think so. Some of their updates have been questionable. I don’t think we need motorized versions but that’s just me. Do they have a genius marketing team? Yes. I’m not sure about other men but I keep on buying them. The name “Proshield” refers to the lubricating strips that are on both sides of the blade. They’re intended to “shield from irritation.” The new blades come in two different versions, Proshield and Proshield Chill. The difference is that the Chill version offers “Cooling Technology for a refreshing sensation during your shave.” I ordered both of them but I received Proshield Chill first so that’s the one I’m reviewing. I’ll add an update to this, or write another review, comparing the two when I receive the regular one.

Now, it’s important to note if you already have a Flexball handle, don’t buy the Proshield package that includes the handle. I purchased it because I was hoping that Gillette would make a change to it, but they didn’t. It’s the exact same one (silly me).

I was genuinely excited to try out the new improvements that they made. I used the Dorco Pace 6 Plus- Six Blade Razor System with Trimmer – Value Pack (10 Cartridges + 1 Handle) for about a year. The price point makes it hard to beat when compared to what Gillette refills cost. It was a decent shave but it would pull sometimes.I also didn’t like the placement of trimmer on the reverse side of the blade. It was a little too far recessed for my liking. So I switched back to Gillette and I immediately noticed the difference. It feels like they use much higher quality blades. I’m not going to lie and tell you that I know the difference between the two and how they’re differently manufactured but I do know that the Gillette was a better, smoother shave.

So finally, after buzzing my head and trimming my stubble (I really have no business calling it a beard) I was ready to put this to the test. I lathered up with foam and started making a few passes. I’m going to be honest here, I really did notice a difference. The blades glided over my skin with ease leaving behind a thin layer of lubrication. I didn’t feel it pull on any hairs either. It was a very enjoyable experience. Mind you, I didn’t use aftershave when I was finished because I wanted to see if I could notice the difference with the additional lubrication strip (and I did). I could do with out the “Chill.” I feel that’s more of a gimmick. The aftershave that I normally use provides me with all the cooling sensation that I need.

Being that I just got this product, I can’t speak on the longevity of the cartridge. However, Gillette’s website claims they “deliver up to a month of shaves, based on three to four uses a week.” So based on a 4 week month, you’re…

Gillette sent me a sample of the new razor and blades to review. I had used their Mach 3 blades exclusively before trying the Fusion Proshield Chill razor. The most notable difference in my experience was the extra strip of lubrication before the blades. This strip makes the shaving experience noticeably more smooth. It took some getting used to, however, as I pushed the blade into my skin harder to actually feel it cutting hair. This led to small cuts and razor burn until I adapted to the new feeling. Once I trusted that it was doing its job and stopped pressing so hard, I stopped getting cut.

The extra strip of lubrication also made edging nearly impossible with the standard 5 blades. Gillette thought of this and added a secret 6th blade to the back of the razor. One might need to use this blade to clean up sideburns or edge a beard when only shaving the neck. The extra “precision trimmer” blade has no lubrication so it feels like a traditional razor. It’s uncomfortable in comparison to the heavily-promoted 5 blades with 2 strips of lubrication, but necessary to get a clean edge. I didn’t like this method of edging, just because it seemed sloppy and could easily irritate the skin if you need to cover more than a millimeter of distance.

The so-called “Chill Cooling Technology” seems like nothing other than a marketing gimmick. I could not feel any cooling sensation. This doesn’t take away form the fact that the shave itself was very smooth; just not noticeably cool.

The blades seem durable. They can easily stand 5-10 shaves without any noticeable degradation.

Overall, the Fusion Proshield Chill razor is a good choice for those looking for an incredibly smooth shave. If you don’t need the extra lubrication, it will feel cumbersome and unnecessary.

If you’re wondering whether or not to get the new pro shield tech go for it. I’ve used the proglide power since it launched and have loved it, but these are even better. They leave your face way less irrated, smooth, and you hardly even have to rinse it while shaving. It will keep its performance even completely covered in cream. Just awesome and well worth the premium over other brands. I tried Harry’s (twice) recently and they definitely give you a perspective on your money’s worth because they SUCK. Spend the couple extra dollars if you can on these and your face will be happy.
