Find Your Perfect Cologne for the Holiday Season
New cologne is an exciting gift during the holidays. It is easy to get in a rut with your favorite fragrance and forget about the countless other choices. What fun to receive a new fragrance – one you may never have considered. So go ahead. Try it and find out if you have not discovered a brand new favorite.
Start with classic cologne, like Ralph Lauren’s Polo, but upgrade to the Ralph Lauren Polo Modern Reserve Men’s spray, created in celebration of the 30th anniversary of Ralph Lauren’s signature fragrance. The limited edition spray bottle is still green, but it is decorated with 24-karat-gold details. And it comes with luxurious leather box, with the signature polo player embossed on the rich tan leather. What a great way to tell somebody you think he is something special. Polo has hints of cardamom, basil, pimento berry, vetyver-leather, jasmine, myrrh incense, wood, patchouli and sueded leather. Its style is definitely masculine, refined and confident.
Another very masculine fragrance is Tom Ford’s Grey Vetiver Spray for Men. Never heard of vetiver? It is a tall grass that grows in South Asia; its roots are used to produce oil that is the basis of many perfumes. High-end designer Tom Ford didn’t leave the vetiver in the background of this fragrance. Instead, using a special extraction technique, he brought it front and center and wraps it around the essence of orange flower, grapefruit, and aromatic sage. While the woods are the top notes of this aroma, the middle contains orris, nutmeg, and pimiento. The beautiful frosted bottle gives you a hint of the special concoction inside.
As Sean John says: “Life without passion is unforgiveable.” That is the message designer and performer Sean John wants to pass on with his Unforgivable Men’s Spray. One of the best-selling fragrances in the world, Unforgiveable is a visceral fragrance – meaning it operates from instinct and emotions. Sean Jean visualizes the Unforgivable man as one with a driving passion. Unforgivable mixes cashmere accord with rum and amber. There are also hints of Sicilian lemon, Italian bergamot, green Mandarin, Moroccan tangerine, grapefruit, juniper leaves, birch leaves, lavender and more. It comes in a rich looking black bottle, with the name stamped in gold lettering.
With almost more than twice the number of women’s fragrances than men’s, it’s time to look at some of the lesser-known, but definitely high-end fragrances.
Start with a classic fragrance, like Joy by Jean Patou Spray. The famous French designer and perfumer, was born in 1880. When Wall Street crashed in 1929, Patou’s designer business floundered, but his perfumes flourished. His best-known perfume has always been, Joy, a floral scent that combined roses and jasmine. That combination of rose and jasmine flowers inspired his line of perfumes thereafter, but Joy remains the most popular. It is still available in the beautiful bijou bottle designed by architect Louis Sue. The bottle follows the principles of divine proportion, a mathematical tool used by the Ancient Greeks to achieve perfect proportions in architecture. Joy is perfect inside and out.
Take a step into a newer and more exotic scent with Viktor & Rolf’s Flowerbomb Spray. The spray was the first fragrance offered by the Amsterdam fashion house of Viktor Horsting and Rolf Snoeren. Its scent hints at a secret garden full of sambac, jasmine, rose, orchid and freesia. It definitely has an Oriental essence. While the fragrance was the work of L’Oreal, Viktor and Rolf were responsible for naming their first scent and designing the beautiful pink grenade-shaped bottle.
Want to appear younger? Ageless Fantasy Anti-Age Perfume Spray boasts that science has proved it has bottled the essence of youth. Ageless Fantasy is touted as the world’s first anti-age perfume – a fragrance that has been proven to make men think a woman wearing it is younger than she really is. Scientists at Rutgers University reportedly conducted research that proved that all things floral improve our emotional health. Just the presence of flowers makes us more emotionally healthy. In clinical trials, men thought women wearing Ageless Fantasy were on average eight years younger than their true age. Based on this research, Ageless Fantasy combined tropical notes and creamy florals and the essence of pink grapefruit, mango, anti-oxidant rich pomegranate, jasmine and musk to create this first-of-its-kind fragrance.
One of the newer trends in fragrances is the advent of unisex sprays – those that can be worn by men and women.
Start with Bulgari Black Unisex Spray. Black, a mixture of black tea and spices, is an unexpected fragrance that pays homage to the world’s great metropolises like New York, Berlin and Tokyo. It embraces the cities’ expressions of concrete and steel. The result is a creative, bold, and surprising scent.
If you are someone who has worn the same fragrance for years, open your mind to the endless choices out there is Drakkar Noir.
